About Birthlight and it's local teachers

Painted Leaves 2

The Birthlight Trust is a non-profit organisation set up in Cambridge in 1999 by founder Françoise Barbira Freedman. It is dedicated to enhance the health and wellbeing of women and their families from conception through to the third year of parenthood. Birthlight truly is the gold standard in its field.

At the heart of Birthlight is Francoise Freedman who since 1990 has developed a unique approach handed down over generations all over the world, continuously combining this knowledge with findings from cutting edge research. Birthlight's ethos and practices are yoga-based but not confined to Yoga as they take inspiration from anthropology, dance, medical science, anatomy and physiology.

Birthlight are not \ franchise,  simply a network – they don’t tell it's teachers what to do but aim to inspire and provide practical ideas whatever a teachers  circumstances or approach.

Gemma Clarke

Gemma is qualified to teach Yoga to all levels,  including Restorative, Pregnancy, Birth Preparation and Postnatal and Baby Yoga and teaches in Bury St. Edmunds.

Gemma first found Yoga 15 years ago and has been teaching for just over 7 years.  She embarked upon a teacher training course back in 2013, at first not necessarily to teach but to understand ways to combat stress. This later blossomed into the need to share the wonderful practices she had learnt.
6 months after her initial training she fell pregnant and found Birthlight, and soon fell in love with how their approach to Yoga supported her pregnancy and postnatal care, especially helping her combat  PGP (Pelvic Girdle Pain) , experience two positive births and support her  during the early stages of motherhood.

Emma brings together her skills as a teacher, her yoga training and her understanding of the needs of parents and babies from being a mum of three children herself, to offer classes that are fun and varied, catering for babies, toddlers, pre-schoolers and children at all stages of development, whilst being supportive, friendly and relaxed.

Lisa Weller

Lisa is a Birthlight teacher based in Diss, Norfolk, teaching Birthlight Pregnancy, Postnatal and Well Woman Yoga.  She also teaches Ashtanga Vinyasa and Yoga for Mothers’.

Lisa’s been teaching yoga since 2009 when she was also working as a personal trainer.   Eventually a love of yoga led to solely teaching yoga and Lisa specialised in Ashtanga Vinyasa.  Lisa is an initiate of the Himalayan Yoga Tradition (2011) and has taught Hatha, Joints and Glands, and beginners meditation based on the teachings of this tradition.

Becoming a mother led to an interest in yoga specifically for women through all the phases of womanhood,  and Lisa started training with Birthlight in 2019 to specialise in Yoga for Women.
